Employee Benefits FAQ
What is a level-funded health plan?
A level-funded plan is a form of self-funding built for small employers. You pay a fixed monthly amount that covers administration, stop-loss insurance and a claims fund. If claims come in lower than expected, part of the unused claims fund may be returned to you, depending on the contract. Learn how level-funded plans work.
How small can a company be to qualify?
We typically require at least 5 enrolled employees.
Is a level-funded plan right for a company with 10 employees?
Often, yes. Many carriers offer level-funded plans to small groups, and a relatively healthy group can pay less than on a fully insured plan. Eligibility usually depends on underwriting, so Stonebridge Partners HR quotes level-funded and fully insured options side by side.
How much can a small business save?
Clients switching from fully insured plans have saved anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars a year, depending on group size, health and plan design.
Is level funding riskier than a regular health plan?
Stop-loss coverage caps what you pay for large claims, so your monthly cost stays fixed. The main tradeoffs are underwriting at enrollment and possible rate changes at renewal.
Which carriers do you work with?
BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Allstate, Sana Benefits, Angle Health and Arlo.
What benefits can you set up besides health insurance?
Dental, vision and life insurance, plus 401(k) plans, all coordinated with your payroll on Rippling.
